Requirements to Practise - Mental Health

ALLIED HEALTH

Requirements for practise and employment vary between disciplines. Please refer to descriptions for each professional group below for details:

NURSING

The Queensland Nursing Council (QNC) is the nurse regulatory authority for Queensland.  To be eligible for employment as a nurse in Queensland, you must first obtain registration with the QNC.

For specific information on registration requirements, please see the following QNC information:

Mental health nurses can also apply for endorsement as a mental health nurse by the QNC.

Whilst not compulsory, endorsement as a mental health nurse is a highly desirable attribute when services are employing higher level nurses.

For further information on endorsement as a mental health nurse follow the link below:

MEDICAL

To be able to work in Queensland all medical practitioners must be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Queensland.
Medical practitioners seeking to practice as a specialist in psychiatry must gain Specialist Registration with the Medical Board of Queensland.
Specialist Registration requires medical practitioners to have fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).
