As of 1 July 2010, under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme, to be eligible for employment as a nurse in Australia you must first obtain registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia have developed new registration standards, which set out obligations for nurses and midwives.
Although mental health endorsement is no longer available through registration, registered nurses can apply to be credentialed with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses. Whilst not mandatory, being credentialed or eligibility for credentialing as a mental health nurse is a highly desirable attribute when services are employing higher level nurses.
To be able to work in Australia all medical practitioners must be eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
Medical practitioners seeking to practice as a specialist in psychiatry must gain Specialist Registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
Specialist Registration requires medical practitioners to have fellowship with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).
