Food safety matters was developed specifically for use with secondary school students studying home economics or hospitality. It is also suitable for TAFE students.
While the primary intention of the resource is to improve food safety in the home environment, many of the concepts are transferable to a commercial environment.
Selective use of components of the resource makes it suitable for training other groups. It has been used successfully with:
Every secondary school in Australia and Australian members of the Home Economics Institute of Australia (HEIA) were sent a complimentary copy of Food safety matters in March 2003, courtesy of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.
Secondary schools in Queensland that opened after 2003 may receive one free copy of Food safety matters, subject to availability. Applicants should send a written request to foodsafety@health.qld.gov.au. The request should include the name and postal address of the school, the year the school opened, plus the name and telephone number of a contact person.

Food safety matters (now in its second edition) was developed by Queensland Health in partnership with the Home Economics Institute of Australia and the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. A technical advisory group including health professionals, science and technology specialists, curriculum officers, students and practicing teachers guided its development.
